Whitman-Walker Health System Announces Chief Executive Officer Ryan Moran to Join Effective November 1, 2021

Washington, DC – Whitman-Walker is thrilled to announce the appointment of Dr. Ryan Moran as Chief Executive Officer of Whitman-Walker Health System effective November 1, 2021. Moran will be the Health System’s first leader following the creation and start-up phase of Whitman- Walker Health System and its family of companies’ model by Founding Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer Don Blanchon.

“I’m delighted that the Health System Board of Directors has chosen Ryan” says Blanchon. “I have no doubt that he has the vision, values and entrepreneurial spirit to advance our mission-driven work in community for many years to come.”

Whitman-Walker Health System exists to support the operations of Whitman-Walker Health and to expand the capacities of some of Whitman-Walker’s most important and crucial functions including fundraising, research and thought leadership. As the leader of Whitman-Walker Health System, Moran will oversee Whitman-Walker Foundation, Whitman-Walker Institute and WWHS Real Property Holdings. Moran will be responsible for leading the strategic and entrepreneurial direction of the Health System using innovative partnerships, revenue models and new business initiatives to ensure the future growth and success of Whitman-Walker and its entire family of companies. He also joins the team as they plan for Whitman-Walker’s greatest expansion in their 40-plus year history – a new home on the East Campus of Saint Elizabeths in Southeast Washington, DC.

“After a comprehensive national search process, we are thrilled to select Ryan. Ryan is a fantastic choice for Whitman-Walker Health System” said Whitman-Walker Health System Board Chair Harry Fox. “In what is essentially a newly envisioned role, Ryan’s experience, knowledge, and expertise will be critical to growing the Whitman-Walker Institute into a leading national research policy and education powerhouse and supporting the Whitman-Walker Foundation in raising much-needed funds to make our care programs and clinical work sustainable.”

Moran comes to Whitman-Walker from MedStar Health where he was Assistant Vice President, Care Transformation and oversaw community and population health strategy and operations for all four MedStar Health hospitals in the Baltimore region – MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center, MedStar Union Memorial Hospital, MedStar Good Samaritan Hospital, and MedStar Harbor Hospital. In this role, he sought to improve the health and wellbeing of local patient populations and communities with a keen focus on addressing health disparities.

Says Moran “I am grateful to work closely with the Board and the entire team at Whitman-Walker to ensure that we advance efforts to root out all systems of inequity, discover new scientific breakthroughs in health care and ensure philanthropic growth for care and support of our future home at Saint Elizabeths.”

Moran also held many important community leadership roles including the Maryland Community Health Worker Advisory Committee, the Maryland Hospital Association Health Equity Committee, and the Maryland Community Health Worker Training Program Review Committee. Moran was also an active member of the Baltimore community, serving on the Board of Directors of Central Baltimore Partnership, Baltimore Choral Arts Society and the Greater Baybrook Alliance.
Moran holds a Doctor of Public Health degree (DrPH) at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health where his research explored peer recovery specialist interventions to address opioid use. He holds Bachelor of Science degrees in public policy and business administration from the University of Charleston and a Master in health services administration from Xavier University.

“I am honored to assume this responsibility and will be wholeheartedly focused on the mission for all persons to live healthy, love openly, and achieve equality and inclusion” continues Moran. “I am humbled to ensure a long legacy of commitment to health care equity through exceptional care, advocacy, research, and education.”
