Washington, DC (November 7, 2024): Whitman-Walker, a leader in primary care, LGBTQ+ health care, research, education and policy with special expertise in HIV care, announces the appointment of Ted Miller, a former Obama administration official with extensive experience in nonprofit leadership and healthcare advocacy, as the Interim Executive Director of the Whitman-Walker Foundation.
Whitman-Walker Health System advances the mission of Whitman-Walker through expanding the capacities of some of the organization’s most critical functions including research, policy and advocacy, thought-leadership, education, and fundraising (through the Whitman-Walker Foundation), as well as supervising critical operational and real estate endeavors. The Foundation, which has it owns board of directors and 501 (c)(3) designation, uses community-based philanthropy to ensure sustainability and support growth for all Whitman-Walker companies.
Miller’s background includes senior fundraising, public engagement, communications, and government affairs roles in two federal agencies, including AmeriCorps, the congressional offices of Sherrod Brown and Tom Daschle, NARAL Pro-Choice America, and a national organization that provides free navigation services to people affected by cancer. In 2022, he launched a consulting practice that focuses on change management and organizational leadership.
“Ted comes to the Whitman-Walker Foundation with a track record of building relationships and executing strategies that increase organizations’ effectiveness and visibility,” said Dr. Heather Aaron, CEO of Whitman-Walker Health System. “His experience also includes serving as volunteer at Whitman-Walker, a testament to his commitment to our mission and the patients we are honored to serve.”
In 2021, while at the Cancer Support Community, Miller worked with Whitman-Walker to facilitate First Lady Jill Biden’s visit to the center to encourage Americans to get cancer screenings.
“As someone who has lived in DC for more than 25 years and benefited from Whitman-Walker’s services, I am honored to contribute to this remarkable and innovative institution,” Miller said. “When it comes to equity and community engagement, the new Max Robinson Center really speaks to my heart, given my many years advocating for policies to make health services more accessible and affordable.”
In addition to his professional accomplishments, Miller served on the board of trustees for the Point Foundation, a national organization that provides scholarships and leadership development to LGBTQ students, and on the Victory Fund Campaign Board, a nonpartisan organization dedicated to electing LGBTQ leaders at all levels of government. A graduate of the University of Kansas, he earned a certificate in organization leadership and change management from Georgetown University.
